About Mora County Lodgers’ Tax Ordinance

Letter to Mora County Commissioners/ Planning & Zooning Commission/ Hospitality Business Owners

Subject: Lodgers tax

I write this note in opposition to the Mora County Lodgers tax Ordinance 2020-002.

This law should be repealed on the grounds that It was passed without the knowledge or input from anyone in the community. This ordinance was passed at the height of the Covid pandemic when we were all closed.  There is so much about this ordinance that is disturbing and many questions that need to be answered.

Mora County is not a tourist destination.  I am the only Motel in town with 7 rooms.  A few Airbnb’s, so how much revenue do you think you will be collecting from so few of us?  Mora Inn clientele are construction workers, people coming to visit family, hunters, government agencies working in town, they are not coming to tour the town of Mora.

Lodgers tax is used for the purpose of marketing, publicizing and promoting facilities and tourist attractions: acquiring, constructing and maintaining tourist attractions and recreational facilities.  Some of the questions are what tourism, what tourist facilities are you promoting, operating, building?  What attractions, events?

There are a few groups in town that are already working on getting people passing thru to stop and spend money in our community like the Mora Chamber of Commerce, Mora creative Council, Mora Mainstreet.  There is no reason to burden our few business owners with extra bookkeeping, extensive paperwork, collection of another tax, and not to mention the intrusion of our County Manager into our personal business.

Thank you for your time,
Christine Wolf
Owner, Mora Inn
